One Piece is fronted and centered by Straw Hat Luffy, whose real name is Monkey D. Luffy. Finding the One-Piece treasure is his ultimate goal as captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, who aspire to become the Pirate King. Furthermore, he is related to several notable figures: Portgas D. Ace and Sabo’s adopted younger brother, Monkey D. Dragon’s son, and Monkey D. Garp’s grandson. Upon the defeat of Big Mom and Kaido, Monkey D. Luffy was officially crowned Emperor of the Sea of the modern era, along with his enemies Shanks, Blackbeard, and Buggy. Urara Takano and Mayumi Tanaka lend their voices to him in the Japanese anime, while Erica Schroeder, Chuck Powers, and Colleen Clinkenbeard do the same in the English version.
Background
Monkey D. Luffy, is the son of Monkey D in the One-Piece series. He is the adopted younger brother of Portgas D. Ace, who died in the series, and the revolutionary Sabo. Dragon and Monkey D. Garp’s grandchild. Furthermore, he is presently betrothed to Boa Hancock, the former warlord, and a member of the Four Emperors. He came into this world in the Goa Kingdom to an unnamed mother and Monkey D. Dragon. However, his grandpa Monkey D. Garp brought him up in a dysfunctional household without ever telling him the truth about his parents.
Even though he was still a child, Luffy’s grandfather Garp brutally trained him to be strong by plunging him into a bottomless ravine, leaving him alone in the jungle at night, and tying him up with balloons to launch him into the sky. His brothers, Ace and Sabo, were left to train with Monkey D. Luffy. Their initial encounter with a pirate crew was with the Bluejam Pirates. He punched one of them in the Sabaody Archipelago after Sabo went missing, which was caused by the World Noble shooting him out of resentment. After Ace left when he was fourteen years old, he spent three years mastering his devil fruit abilities before becoming a pirate.
He is on a quest to become pirate king and is believed to be in search of the legendary treasure known as the One Piece, which was supposedly left behind by the former pirate king, Gold Roger. The band of pirates headed by “Red-Haired” Shanks, who would visit his island when he was a little boy, served as an inspiration to him.
During one of the pirate crew’s visits, he inadvertently ate the Devil Fruit known as Gum-Gum Fruit (ゴムガムの尟, Gomu Gomu no mi), which caused him to transform into rubber. The inability to swim is a major negative of having these abilities; anyone who eats a Devil Fruit will die if they accidentally fall into the water.
Characteristics
Monkey D. Luffy, a boy in his teens, has fair skin, black eyes, and short, disheveled black hair. A scar appears beneath his left eye from the knife wound he inflicted on himself beneath the eye. He was severely wounded by Akainu at the Battle of Marineford; the wound left an X-shaped scar on his chest. His primary attire consists of a straw hat that he frequently wears (a gift from Red-Haired Shanks), a three-button sleeveless vest in red, short blue pants with white cuffs, and sandals in light brown with black straps. Right after the time jump, he puts on a long-sleeved, open-collared sweater in red with four buttons and a yellow sash around his waist. Those short blue pants, sandals, and straw hats are all trademarks of his.
Strengths
Very Powerful
Since becoming a member of the Four Emperors, Monkey D. Luffy has grown into a pirate legend. With a bounty of three million dollars, he is considered a major danger to the World Government’s operations. Egghead finds Luffy facing off against Rob Lucci, his old enemy, and showing off his strength in the face of the CP0 agent. After Luffy vanquished Kaido, the Admiral proclaimed his strength to be formidable in his fight against Kizaru. He can harm Kizaru since he was the one who injured Borsalino first.
Transformation
Monkey D. Luffy has proven time and time again that he can level up in combat. His development of the Second and Third Gears, as well as his rediscovery of previously untapped uses for the Gomu Gomu no Mi, are prime examples of this. This is further proven after the two-year time jump when he becomes normal after mastering Haki and overcoming the extreme weaknesses of both Gears. Despite his injuries, he was on the verge of destroying the entire Noah, an enormous ship half the size of Fishman Island, had the Sea Kings not intervened.
Method of Attack
Become an Expert in Hand-to-Hand Combat: In battle, Monkey D. Luffy has shown to be remarkably versatile, thanks to his Gomu Gomu no Mi—a technique that turns him into a rubber man—and his extraordinary physical abilities. Although Monkey D. Luffy’s fighting style is mostly improvised and self-taught, he has proven that he can compete with Rob Lucci and other martial arts experts. This is in contrast to Zoro and Sanji.
Smarts: He may be dim-witted, but he knows his Gomu Gomu no Mi inside and out, and that knowledge grants him natural rubber qualities and insulation. Since he is immune to electrical attacks, he can fend off Enel’s lightning-based attacks flawlessly. Techniques such as Second Gear and Third Gear are within Monkey D. Luffy’s reach. In the former, he boosts his strength, speed, and oxygen levels by increasing blood flow through his rubber blood vessels. In the second, he increases his damage output by biting into his fingers to inflate his arm and bones, turning it into a giant.
Superior stamina: Monkey D. Luffy also has remarkable stamina. Despite his satiety from biscuits, he fought Cracker for eight hours. On top of that, he played for 12 hours straight against Katakuri despite barely getting any sleep for three days, getting hurt multiple times by Cracker, Sanji, and the Furious Army, and almost going hungry in the process.
Quickness: Monkey D. Luffy shows off his nimble footwork by effortlessly dodging, rolling, and even flipping. At the beginning of the series, Monkey D. Luffy shows that he can out-react his enemies, including Kuro, Arlong, Bellamy, and Enel.
He has extraordinary healing abilities and is famous for his speedy recovery. Within Impel Down, Monkey D. Luffy’s inherent healing abilities were fortified by a combination of Ivankov’s healing hormones and his unwavering determination. Ivankov thought it was nothing short of miraculous that he was able to recover from the deadly dose of Magellan’s poisoning in less than a day, all because of this.
Despite the risk to himself, Luffy is unwavering in his commitments. He told Nami he would be quiet in Mock Town, but all he did was allow Zoro and the Bellamy Pirates to beat him. Not that he won’t keep his word; it’s just that he has only done so when it goes against his moral principles, like seeking revenge on an offended friend. In addition to being polite and responsible, he is also quite obstinate. Luffy has become more level-headed and mature throughout the series, but he only acts this way when he and his friends are in peril or when someone insults his beliefs or him. No one should make fun of someone’s death, in Luffy’s opinion, and it doesn’t matter who died. In general, the character is portrayed as someone who is modest, compassionate, and courageous. They possess a powerful personality and a mindset that refuses to give up.
