Early life

Ronald Williams was born in New York City on July 29, 1951. His father, Ronald, was a professor of African-American studies at Yale University, and his mother, Shirley (nee Smith), was a professor of English at the City University of New York. Williams was the second of four children. He has two sisters, Deborah and Stephanie, and a brother, Keith. Williams was raised in a middle-class household in the Bronx. He attended the High School of Music & Art, where he played the violin in the school orchestra. He graduated from Yale University in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in music.

Williams began his career as a musician, playing the violin in the pit orchestra of the Broadway production of “Hair.” He later toured with the rock band The Who and played on their album “Who Are You.” Williams also played on albums by Patti Smith, The Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen.
