What Is the Online I-485 Form?

I-485

Applicants who have recently immigrated to the United States should complete and submit Form I-485. This document authorizes noncitizens to work and travel outside the United States. It is also used to apply for legal permanent residency.

This form requires applicants to provide information about themselves, family members, and employment. In addition, applicants will be asked to indicate whether they have been denied entry into the United States. When applying for a green card, you must also provide your alien registration number.

Previous marriages

You will also be asked to provide information about your previous marriages. This information is important if you are immigrating by marriage. You must also provide biographical information for your spouse and biographical information for your children. If you have children under the age of 18, you must provide their names and date of birth. If you have stepchildren, you must provide their names.

Otherwise, future relationships may be questioned. We may also be required to provide information about a child who has been adopted or may be legally adopted.

Form I-485 includes an optional section to indicate if the individual has special consideration needs. These shelters can be provided by the government if appropriate. If you do not speak English, we recommend that you consult a lawyer or an interpreter. Health information should also be provided. For example, if you have a disability, you may need to provide information about public services available to people with disabilities.

Green card applicants

Green card applicants must also provide information about family members. This includes adult children who must be listed. If you have children under the age of 18 or legally adopted children, you must also provide their names and dates of birth. If you have stepchildren, you must also provide their date of birth and name.

Form I-485 is also intended to assist USCIS in conducting background checks. This includes investigating criminal records and potential security threats. Background checks can also compare the information you provide to databases from multiple institutions. In addition, we may ask for secondary evidence such as census records or school records. If you lose or forget one of your documents, you may be asked for a second proof.

Form I-485 requires applicants to provide their real name and social security number. You can also skip the first question if you don’t have a social security number. If you don’t have a social security number, you can also get a replacement card. If you are unsure how to fill out the form, please consult an immigration attorney or visit:
